Jewson Western League premier division: Clevedon Town 3, Wellington 0
Wellington suffered another defeat on their travels as they were beaten by an impressive Clevedon Town side last night (Wednesday, August 28th).
In their ninth successive away game because of cricket at the Playing Field, the Tangerines conceded goals either side of half-time and a third right at the death.
The result lifted Clevedon, much fancied for promotion this season, up into third in the table.
Wellington boss Richard Cherry made four changes to the side beaten 4-2 at Paulton Rovers on Saturday.
He was without striker Matt Crawley (injured) and midfielder Glen Wright (away), so brought in Josh Baker and Nathan Byrne – both dual registered with Willand Rovers – while Harry Scott and Sam Sheldrake returned to the starting 11.
Clevedon kicked off at a high tempo which they proceeded to maintain throughout the game.
Wellington defended well to keep them at bay and even had a great chance after 34 minutes when Miles Quick was put clear on goal, but his shot went wide of the target.
Just as it looked like they would reach the break goalless, the visitors’ resistance was broken when Freddie King dribbled past three players before shooting low into the net.
Clevedon doubled their lead in the fifth minute of the second half as a clearance was charged down by Joe Teall and his low cross was converted by Sam Beresford.
The hosts went on to boss the rest of the game but didn’t add to their tally until stoppage time when Kieran Ireland scored their third against his former club.
Wellington will be looking to end a run of three successive defeats in Saturday’s local derby away to Bridgwater United.
