Jewson Western League premier division: Saltash United 0, Wellington 2
Another battling performance saw Wellington make it six wins on the bounce in Cornwall yesterday (Saturday, November 2nd).
The remarkable run has seen them score 17 goals and concede only two as they climbed up to 12th in the table.
And it has been achieved despite manager Richard Cherry having to repeatedly chop and change his side.
There were three more changes for the trip to Saltash – never a happy hunting ground for the Tangerines – with Ryan Hibbert, Jake Mawford and Charlie Wilson coming in for Sam Pashen, Jack Bryant and Nathan Byrne.
But they got off to a flying start by taking the lead after only three minutes.
Mawford played a perfect ball to Mark Cornish on the right of the box, and he took a touch before curling a superb left-foot finish in off the far post.
Saltash moved the ball well in the first half without seriously troubling keeper Jake Viney and Wellington had a couple of dangerous breaks before doubling their lead just before half-time.
Striker Jake Quick robbed the ball off a hesitant home defender in the area and smashed an unstoppable shot past keeper Jordan Duffey.
Playing up the slope in the second half, the Tangerines knew they were going to be up against it, and they were pegged back for long periods.
But the back line of Hibbert, Jason Quick, Tom Stone and Sam Gleeson turned in another excellent display while, behind them, Viney was on top form including pushing a spectacular overhead kick on to the post.
Saltash also hit the top of the bar from a free kick near the end while the visitors always looked dangerous on the break with Gleeson driving a shot just wide.
After ten anxious minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle blew and cock-a-hoop Wellington had kept another clean sheet and equalled their win tally for the whole of last season.
Next Saturday, they are away to bottom-of-the-table Welton Rovers.
