Somerset County Women’s League division one: Wildcats Ladies 5, Weston-super-Mare Ladies Reserves 0

Wildcats returned to winning ways with an emphatic victory over Weston Reserves at the Playing Field yesterday (Sunday, October 20th).

Leah Morrell was player-of-the-day and is pictured with Ricki Waygood, representing match sponsor, Milverton Sawmill.

Despite playing their first team top scorer, Weston were no match for the hosts who were superior in all facets of the game throughout the 90 minutes.

Prior to the game, Wildcats were led on to the field by members of their U11s squad.

Playing down the slope in the first half, Wildcats were quick off the mark and had a couple of early chances but were unable to test the keeper while Leah Morrell was dubiously flagged for offside when through on goal.

Jess Regan had a cheeky long-range effort when she saw the keeper off her line, before Weston fired over the bar from close range.

The only goal of the first half came on 33 minutes. Charlotte Ayers played an excellent ball wide for Morrell to run on to, however she was hacked down by a Weston defender who earned a yellow card.  Emily Ayers stepped up to smash the free kick high into the top corner.

Weston’s star player was now in defence, having been bossed out of the game by the outstanding Georgia Purdy, and was lucky to escape without at least a caution when bringing down Ebony Sellick when she was through on goal.

Wildcats did almost get a second from a corner, but the referee deemed that not all of Ebony Selick’s shot had crossed the goal line

The second half was barely five minutes old when Wildcats added to their tally.  Robyn Stockman received the ball wide out from Bryony Sellick before cutting in and unleashing a thunderbolt from the edge of the area.

Stockman doubled her tally with an equally impressive goal, having been played in by Coates following some excellent footwork.

Wildcats were now in complete control and two superb efforts from Purdy were met by outstanding saves from the Weston keeper.

Morrell grabbed a deserved goal on 80 minutes, hitting home from the edge of the area after racing past her defender.

Deep into injury time, Regan headed the ball into the path of Ebony Sellick and, with the final kick of the game, she rounded off the scoring with the ball squirming under the away keeper.

Following the entertaining game, Wildcats were applauded off the pitch by the 85-strong crowd, to whom the team are thankful for their support. Wildcats would also like to thank Milverton Sawmill for sponsoring the match.

Player-of-the-day, sponsored by Mundy Veneer was Leah Morrell.

On Sunday, Wildcats are in cup action when they visit division two AEK Boko Ladies Development.
